whats the title of the movie about a girl who had cleft palate?

when i was a kid, i watched a movie about a girl who had cleft palate
(it was a true story). her nationality i think was Chinese or
Japanese. her mother and her brother left her except her father. she
was too shy to go outside because she would be made fun of so her dad
home schooled her. another girl from the U.S. i think had a project
about children who had cleft palate and she saw the other girl's face.
and i think one of them went to the other girl's hometown and then
both of them met (im just going to say "the first girl" is the one who
had cleft palate, and "second girl" is the one who had the project"
sorry to confuse you i dont know there names) and they both became
friends then the first girl went to surgery. and then she was cured
=). i think at the ending said the first girl became a model or both
of them did.
